Care and Cleaning

Use only plastic, nylon, silicone or wooden utensils with the MAKER SmartSteam™ to protect the ceramic nonstick finish and prolong the life of the pot and coating.

Allow pot to cool completely before washing. Never immerse a hot pot in cold water as this will cause irreparable warping.

It is recommended that you hand wash the SmartSteam™ in order to retain the beauty of the ceramic coating, however, the pot is dishwasher-friendly (NOTE: Dishwasher may discolor metal base of pot and create a residue on bottom. This does not affect the product’s performance). NEVER use abrasive cleaning pads or cleansers that can damage the pot and void the warranty. DO NOT use baking soda, bleach or chlorine based cleaning agents. DO NOT use steel wool or sponges with a polishing agent as it will scratch the coating and void the warranty.

Do not use alcohol based cleaners to clean the knob on the lid.

Do not use highly acidic or alkaline cleaner/detergent, or a combination of vinegar and baking soda on SmartSteam™. Neutral detergent or mild soapy water is recommended.

If food or grease is caked on the pot, soak it in lukewarm water to help with the release. Do not remove with a knife or other sharp object. This will scratch the coating and void the warranty.

If cooking a dish immediately after another dish, cleaning the product with mild soap to prevent stains and deterioration of the coating is recommended.

This is a very nice addition to my cookware. So far I have used it to cook a Yankee Pot Roast. I used a top of the round roast beef. This cut makes a very good lean pot roast. I seared the meat in the cookware in olive oil on all sides, this takes a few minutes.. I used one onion soup package in 2 cups of boiling water for the stock. I cooked the meat for four hours. The vegetables, potatoes, carrots and onions cooked in the last hour. Kept the lid on and voila a dinner for 4. It was a perfect size. 5 quarts. I also used it to steam green beans. This takes about 30-45 minutes.
This is a beautiful 5 Quart Steamer that I'll be using weekly for my Monday meals. I LOVE to cook Zatarain's every week and eat it over several days, great leftovers! In the past I've used my biggest frying pan and then after cooking and eating, I transferred the remaining food to a covered dish to put in the refrigerator. Now because of the beautiful MAKER Homeware Smartsteam Shallow Ceramic Steamer with it's smaller size ( No Huge Handle!), I can put it straight in to the refrigerator after cooling. This pan is surprisingly light compared to some of the other heavy pans I've had in the past and I like that. This steamer's wonderful coating cleans up perfectly too. I look forward to trying more adventurous cooking down the line, I went to the website that is listed in the box for this pan and there are some interesting recipes that I want to try,now that I have this wonderful steamer This is a very nice steamer and I look forward to many years of cooking in this new piece of cookware.
While I haven't literally replaced my 12" nonstick saute pan and my Le Creuset Dutch oven (I have plenty of room & this pot's lid won't won't work in a really hot oven), I haven't used either since I started using this pot. It's an excellent all-around pot. The size, depth, and shape make it very flexible. The height is just 1/4" less than the 5-qt Dutch oven, and it's 2" wider, with a rounded bottom more like the LC soup pots. This gives more surface area for the same volume, so reducing is faster (looking forward to trying it with jam this summer), and you don't get food caught up in the corners. The lid can close right or vent. The lid is relatively heavy to stay put, but both pieces are dramatically lighter than their cast-iron LC Dutch oven counterparts (2lbs15oz/4lbs13 oz with lid vs. 6lbs 7oz/9lbs11oz with lid), awfully nice if you have troubled wrists. The black is actually a metallic dust sparkle, which was very unexpected and pretty awesome. It's not garish & only noticeable when you're close enough to be using it. As a saute pan, the nonstick coating is glorious, at least starting out. I'm eager to see how it hold up to my hot commercial stove and my partner's pathological use of high flame, but starting out, it's the best nonstick I've used, and feels very solid. The utter slickness can also be one if the pot's few downsides, since, at least so far, I can't build a fond for a pan sauce--but maybe that's because the delicious bits stay on the meat--steaks, salmon & chicken all browned beautifully and evenly. So if you're doing a pan sauce, stick with your cast iron, but if you're searing lovely steaks, this works like a champ. The tall sides and side handles make tossing veggies or stirfry easy and efficient. The only real downsides to this pot are: it's not safe in a really hot oven--the pot's good to 450, while the lid only goes to 350, so that cuts out dutch iven bread and my current beef bourgengnon recipe (but I'm more apt to make a double batch in my giant 10qt oven anyway). And the handles get very hot, very quickly, so if you're used to the slow-heating handles of a cast iron oven, there's a bit of a learning curve to keep from burning your hands.
